Sliding scale rates
Sliding scale rates are the most equitable pricing structure for Hollerin’ Up, allowing us to bring on smaller organizations who are taking a greater risk retaining a consultant than organizations or individuals with larger budgets. When scoping projects with prospective clients, I like to bring in teachings I’ve received from my meditation teachers on the Buddhist practice of giving dāna, a Pali word for generosity. When compensating their Dharam teachers, students are encouraged to tap into the spiritual merits of the teachings imparted to them, and give a contribution to their teacher that is meaningful and joyful. I like this short article from Spirit Rock on the topic. Here’s an excerpt:
“Giving dāna shouldn’t feel like an obligation or as something to feel worry or doubt about. Giving can be joyful and satisfying, and so our practice can be to look for those positive feelings as we practice giving. Giving strengthens relationships and communities, and opens us to the insight into interdependence. Bhikkhu Bodhi writes that ‘giving serves to break down the egocentric frame of mind on the basis of which we habitually interact with others.’ It is fundamentally relational.
The other side of this teaching is also important. The appropriate recipients, the Buddha tells us, are people who are free from the great poisons [greed, hatred, and delusion] or who are working to be free from them. The joy of giving comes when we know those we are supporting are practicing sincerely and wholeheartedly toward liberation.”
It is in this spirit of joyfully giving and receiving that Hollerin’ Up hopes to engage clients. As such, all projects are negotiated on a case-by-case basis, factoring in the timeline, scale, and scope of the project, as well as the budget capacity of the client. The below pricing matrix was recently updated to ensure sustainable compensation for Hollerin’ Up, and is also intended as a starting point as we discuss compensation.
